You turn to the side, look at the clock \u2013 2:07 a.m.<br>  \nAnd you think: \u201cHow is it possible that my baby wakes up almost every night at the same time?\u201d<br><br>  \n\nDon\u2019t worry \u2013 you\u2019re not imagining it. This phenomenon even has a name: the \u201c2 a.m. effect.\u201d<br>  \nAnd there\u2019s more behind it than mere coincidence.<br><br>  \n\nBaby sleep works differently than adult sleep<br>  \nBabies sleep in much shorter cycles than adults \u2013 usually between two and four hours.<br>  \nWithin these cycles they switch between deep sleep and lighter sleep.<br>  \nEspecially in the lighter phases they are more easily awakened \u2013 sometimes just for seconds, sometimes for longer.<br><br>  \n\nIf your baby always wakes up at about the same time, it\u2019s often because their sleep cycle shifts into a lighter phase at exactly that time.<br>  \nAnd in this phase they notice changes:<br>  \n\u2013 \u201cI\u2019m no longer in mom\u2019s or dad\u2019s arms.\u201d<br>  \n\u2013 \u201cMy pacifier is gone.\u201d<br>  \n\u2013 \u201cThe sound I fell asleep to has disappeared.\u201d<br><br>  \n\nThis is not a bad habit \u2013 it\u2019s biology<br>  \nIn these moments your baby is seeking safety. They unconsciously \u201ccheck\u201d:<br>  \nAm I still safe? Is everything the same as when I fell asleep?<br><br>  \n\nAttachment-oriented sleep coaches and researchers such as Dr. William Sears, Dr. James McKenna or even the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine confirm:<br>  \nThis nighttime awakening is a completely normal developmental and attachment behavior.<br>  \nEspecially in the first year of life, regular short wake phases are biologically intended to ensure closeness and care.<br><br>  \n\nWhat you can do<br>  \nYou can\u2019t always completely prevent the 2 a.m. effect, but you can gently soften it:<br><br>  \n\n1. Provide the most consistent sleep conditions possible.<br>  \nIf your baby falls asleep with a pacifier, comfort cloth, or soft sounds, they should be able to easily find these aids again at night.<br><br>  \n\n2. Observe the daily rhythm.<br>  \nSometimes it helps to slightly adjust bedtime or the last nap of the day so that your baby starts the night more rested.<br><br>  \n\n3. Offer closeness and security.<br>  \nOften a gentle stroke, a calm hand on the back, or a quiet \u201cshhh\u201d is enough for your baby to know: everything is fine, mom or dad is here.<br><br>  \n\nWhy it\u2019s important not to let yourself be unsettled<br>  \nMany parents think at 2 a.m.: \u201cWhy isn\u2019t it working for us?\u201d<br>  \nBut believe me: it is working \u2013 just differently than you might have expected.<br>  \nYour baby is showing you that they trust you.
